Party at The Cliff: UK baseball student area takes on life of its own on opening night

For Tuesday’s Kentucky baseball home opener on a breezy 70 degree evening, that porch couldn’t come close to holding the party that spilled out into the parking lot behind the outfield wall, part of a record crowd of 4,118 for a single regular season game. Never mind the score (Kentucky lost 3-2 to Xavier), the celebration of the return of baseball and a glimpse of spring had the outfield jumping.

Kentucky baseball home opener moved up a day

The Cats (4-0) are coming off a successful opening weekend where they knocked off Wofford, USC Upstate and Evansville in Spartanburg, S.C., behind strong pitching and an offense that used extra-base hits to harass the opposing pitching staffs. It is the first time UK has started 4-0 on the road since the 2007 season and first 4-0 overall start since 2012.
